“Orion.”
Merik stood. He knew that when his surname was used, he and Eva would be sent above ground, into Old New York. That Eva was accompanying him was obvious; they were a team, and a very efficient one at that. Together, they were almost always victorious in their missions, both fast, both nimble, and both willing to fight anything and everything to keep the other safe.
“The Kentarous have tracked down another halvie, but we can’t get to her,” Aerynn was saying, sounding almost bored, if not a little whiney. This was tolerable, mostly because she wasn’t trying to woo him.
“Anyways, you two need to get her here,” she said, twirling a finger over her shoulder to indicate their base. “She’s waaaaaaaaay out that way somewhere,” she jerked her thumb behind her. “The Kentarous wanna see you before you go to equip you… then go see Vladimir. He’ll tell you where you need to go and yadda yadda blah blah, now go away,” she said, waving him off with a delicate flutter of her hand.
When he turned, Merik realised that Eva had been beside him, and he smiled down at her, taking her hand and placing a light kiss on her brow. Together, they walked to the lab, a massive, glass-encased room with several cubicles and strange gadgets that only the Kentarou family knew how to work.
“Hey, Mer! EVIE!” Katya greeted, happily skipping over to hug them before switching into her ‘lab behaviour’. “Mr. Kentarou is setting out your preferred tools as we speak. After you damaged them last time, we’ve been trying to find a way to keep them in tact. Anyways, Mrs. Kentarou has managed to clean them up and keep them from messing up again. They’re in Emika’s workstation, seeing as mine is… well,” she trailed off, sweeping her gaze over her work table that was covered in several pieces of odds and ends that made Merik blink.
“What is that?” he asked, not bothering to conceal the confusion in his voice, and felt that Eva had been wondering the exact same thing, judging by her pique in interest when he spoke.
“One of their satellites,” Katya replied, spitting out the word ‘their’ as if it were poison. She was talking about the humans, of course, so he understood her contempt of them. “We’re attempting to rewire the settings so that when we launch it back up, we’ll be able to track where they’re coming from so we can send a group out and shut them off.”
Merik nodded, and Katya sent them off to Emika’s colourful workstation, where they loaded themselves down with artillery and other useful tools. Once they were ready, they thanked the family and bid their farewells, heading to the opposite side of the Night Coven, designated name for anyone against the humans, to see Vladimir. He wasted no time in briefing them, and sent them off, in much the same manner that Aerynn had; which made it obvious where she had gotten her attitude.
Ten minutes later, Merik and Eva were in Old New York, heading in a general North/Northwest direction. Stealthily, they made their way to their destination, an old run-down building complex quite a ways away from the Night Coven. Tentatively, with weapons drawn, they navigated their way inside, searching every room for the slightest signs of life.
They found her on the top floor, easily staying her feeble attempt to attack them and they quickly told her about the Night Coven, and how they had come to help her.
“You can’t stay here much longer, anyway,” Merik told her, when she hesitated about joining them. “We found you, what makes you think they won’t?”
This scared her, he and Eva could feel it, and he sent her waves of comfort and assurance to help ease her. “We’re only here to help, and we need to get going soon,” he informed. He wasn’t looking forward to meeting up with any of the superhumans, humans given a serum to make them almost as strong and fast as vampires. It gave the halvies a bit of a disadvantage, another reason they were sent out to get her.
In the end, she agreed, and she threw her little bag of possessions over her shoulders and followed them, Merik and Eva keeping her between them. Their return was slightly delayed, mostly because they had to be more cautious with the halvie, so they were forced to move slower.
When they were but a few miles from their underground entrance, they heard the tale-tell sirens that alerted that they, or someone else, had been caught by the satellites. They ran, knowing that the superhumans showed up within seconds of the noise, shoving the girl roughly ahead of them and muttering curses under their breaths.
The shots came out of nowhere, causing the building beside them to collapse in their path. Eva and Merik quickly jumped over the mess, but the halvie misjudged the distance and tripped over the top, skidding to a halt just as another blast sent debris upon her, effectively knocking her unconscious.
Eva was on her in an instant, being much faster, throwing herself over the girl’s body as Merik covered her, taking out their opponents with well-aimed shots, the bullets designed to kill. They were still for a few moments afterwards, making sure the coast was clear before he made his way over to help Eva with the girl.
That was when the explosion rang out, right after the girl was transferred into his arms, and he was sent flying forward, having gotten the force of the blow. The girl was propelled out of his grip, but he caught her once he was back on his feet. His eyes quickly scanned the cloud of white dust for any signs of Eva, his apprehension fogging his better judgment to keep low and protect the girl.
“Merik!”
Eva’s cry was a wakeup call to him, and he tucked the girl carefully into a small sewer opening and set a small tracking device on her, so the others could retrieve her, before he turned around. He launched himself into the air that was full of debris, searching out Eva’s scent, and found, with a sinking feeling, that she had used her ability.
Just as well, he thought, knowing it would keep the superhumans from being able to track her just as effectively as it was stopping him. Instead, he focused on their link, searching out her feelings of inevitable dread. He made a face, not liking that she was feeling that way, and made his way cautiously in her general direction. With an inaudible sigh of relief, Merik came beside Eva, taking her in his arms and kissing her roughly, which she returned until they realised they had better get out of there.
They were within reach of the girl, who was now conscious and waving at them frantically, when the ground beneath them crumbled. Merik just barely kept his ground, but Eva had been behind him and fell into the crater. Without thinking, he threw himself after her, sliding down the steep land until he was able to make out her form, running as fast as she could on whatever was stable. His eyes locked on the pursuing superhuman, which was intent on trailing Eva and trying to slow her down.
Thank God she’s fast, he had time to think before he flipped onto a beam and went to intercept the disgusting excuse for a human. “Die, asshole,” he growled, before he aimed a shot directly between the eyes. He took Eva’s hand and vaulted back above ground, glad that the collapse hadn’t been too near the NC, so they were safe.
Handing Eva his gun, he prowled ahead of her, keeping out a watchful eye. They made it back to the girl, much to her relief, taking either side of her as they sprinted behind buildings and skirted streets. Just as they were going to call for a teleporter to take them below, the halvie ran back into the street, doubling back to retrieve her bag.
“Nooo!” Eva shouted, but it was too late, the alarms were going off again, and they scrambled after her. They managed to pull her behind a building just as the shots rang out again, and Merik covered them with his body.
“Evie, if anything hap-”
“Shut up!” she hissed, placing a firm hand over his mouth. She had sensed his foreboding and her eyes narrowed into slits as she glared at him. “You’re not leaving me, you can’t. I won’t let you,” she hissed, removing her hand so she could kiss him.
Just as things were quiet and they were about to start moving again, the wall was blown apart behind them, sending them all flying in separate directions. Briefly, Merik saw that the halvie girl was okay and that she hid immediately. He then focused on Eva, who was trapped under the majority of wreckage, fighting with all her might to free herself. There was a massive superhuman, with two desensitizers towering over her, making her seem even more diminutive than she already was, which frightened him.
Desensitizers, he knew, were able to inhibit even vampires from moving, then they sucked the life force out of whatever they caught, which was how they had managed to make so many superhumans, vampires were the source of their serum. And they were going after Eva.
With a new found burst of agility, Merik raised another of his guns and aimed it at the superhuman, which was in mid-reach for Eva, and shot a blast of acid on the grotesque woman’s fingers. She let out a blood-curling scream and sent an icy glare at him that made him think of the phrase ‘If looks could kill’. He aimed his own glare at her, adding a feral growl to accompany it.
“If you lay one bloody finger on her, I’ll paint that building with your fucking brains,” he threatened coldly, pointing the barrel of his army bazooka right at the superhuman’s head.
She grinned wickedly and opened up her jacket, showing the wide display of explosives on her person. He also had a view of how disgustingly warped the serum had made her. Sure, she had a slightly inhuman beauty added to her, but muscle shouldn’t ever look like that. They were bulgy with thick cords that looked like overgrown cists. Their legs were slightly longer, more willowy, but thick so that they could run with speed. He knew their hair was kept short to keep vampires from ripping it from their skulls, so they were pretty obvious to tell from regular humans.
“Think that scares me?” Merik asked, narrowing his eyes with mock-bravado. He wanted her away from Eva, and if he shot at the superhuman, she’d be burnt, if not worse. “We’ll survive,” he lied easily, though his breathing was getting laboured with anxiety. “Will you?”
“You love her.” It was a statement, and he wondered if she were a telepath, knowing that information would be bad information for the Kentarou family. It had been widely discussed, but not confirmed, that the superhumans could inherit the abilities of the vampires that their serum came from.
Merik gave his head a tiny shake. He was overreacting, or so he hoped. He saw movement, and almost blew his cover when he noticed Eva sliding along the ground underneath the wall that she had been stuck under. Now all he had to do was blow the superhuman and robots to hell and they were home free.
Just as his finger reached the trigger, he heard Eva scream. He turned to see her grabbed up by one of the desensitizers, and yelled in protest.
“EVIE!!!” he screamed, blinking when he was blinded by the horrible flash of light that meant that the desensitizer had taken her. He watched her small form tumble to the ground, lifeless.
“Merik!”
He heard his name from somewhere behind him, but he didn’t listen, he was running towards the offending machine, intent on tearing it bit from ruthless bit. He let out a loud yell as he shot it again and again before finally reaching it and pulling his baton from his belt loop. As he leapt into the air, he twisted the silver in his hands and it came open into a deadly, razor-sharp staff. He flipped his body in mid-air, slicing the machine’s ‘head’ off and watched it fall to the ground with a heavy thud.
“Merik!” he heard again, but paid no attention to it as he assaulted the other robot as well, hacking at it until it was unrecognisable and squirting liquid into the air. Finally, he turned towards the superhuman, his face contorted with fury, determination, and an endless grief that kept him going.
Before he could reach the superhuman, it was exploding, making everything around them flare up in angry red smoke and he felt arms restraining him.
“MERIK!”
It was Damien. He had grabbed him forcefully about the shoulders and tackled him to the ground. “It’s too late, you can’t do anything more! If you keep going, they’ll get you, too!” Damien was saying, motioning for the halvie to join them.
Merik continued to struggle, clawing his fingers in the ground as he slowly dragged himself away from Damien to Eva’s body, sobbing with everything he was worth. He heard more sirens, loud, though they sounded like they were miles away as he reached her, pulling her against him. He was vaguely aware that Damien had grabbed him again, with his other arm around the girl before he teleported into the base. The last thing Merik’s mind comprehended before his world went black was a pair of unblinking, sightless eyes. One green, one blue.
“Merik.”
He opened his eyes to find Eva staring down at him in alarm, her arms wrapped protectively around him as she searched his face, trying to understand why he was in such an emotional state.
“Y- you were gone!” Merik gasped, sinking to his knees and hugging her middle, sobs threatening to break through. He didn't care that his hold on her was almost restraining, the thought of losing her was more than enough prompting to make sure that she never left his arms again. There were tears coursing down his face.
Eva frowned, running her fingers through his hair comfortingly as she sent a glare directly behind Merik. “Bitch,” she muttered, her face contorted with hatred for the blonde woman, who looked remarkably pleased with how things had turned out.
“You guys are no fun,” Aerynn pouted, turning on her heel and skipping down the hall.
“Orion.”
Merik stood. He knew that when his surname was used, he and Eva would be sent above ground, into Old New York.
