Eva finally looked at Merik but it was only to glare because it sounded like he was insinuating that she couldn't forgive people. "And how am I suppose to know you won't do it again? You're just going to find excuse after excuse to why I should stay down here because you don't want me above ground so it 'justifies'" - she gestured airquotes with her fingers - "you going above ground alone again. 'Cause I know it will happen. I can't trust you anymore."

Merik met Eva's glare when she finally looked at him, not at all put off because his insinuation was only directed at himself, meaning that she couldn't forgive him. "I beg your pardon?" he asked, letting his armfull of clothes fall back onto the floor so he could properly speak with her without flinging them around. "What makes you think I'm going to do anything like this again when it's creating a rift between us as it is? After all this time, do you assume I care so little about us?" he asked, his voice going quiet because his one mistake hadn't seemed like it was going to have this great a consequince when he first accepted the mission. He couldn't help being upset with the fact that she didn't trust him anymore, but, like her, he tried to keep himself composed, even though it was obvious they knew how the other was feeling. "I'm sorry. I was an idiot, I should've thought it through more, but I didn't, and now I'm apologising."

"If it keeps me 'safe' then why not?" Eva asked. She was finding it difficult to fight against him now, and didn't know what else to say right away. She was still angry at him, but not as much as before. She wasn't ready to forgive him though, knowing it would take a while before she would be. "Yeah, you are an idiot," she agreed, backing up so that she was in their bedroom and she started to close the door. "You're gonna be a father, by the way," she added quietly just before the door shut.

"Because it would hurt you and I don't want to be the cause of your pain any more," Merik answered, not caring that she probably didn't expect an answer to her question. He let out a defeated sigh when he saw that she was backing up and reaching for the door at the same time, knowing she was about to bid him good night. Silently, he accepted her insult, knowing he brought it upon himself for suggesting it.
Her final comment didn't sink in until after she had closed the door, and he wasn't exactly sure he had heard her right until after he repeated it to himself several times. Immediately, the logical part of his mind was racing - she had gone through a lot while aboveground. What if he hadn't gotten out all of the poison? What if she had taken a blow to her stomach? What if the stress he had caused her proved too much again? ,She should be examined by Tristan' he thought, not voicing it aloud because he knew Eva wouldn't appreciate his concern just then. When he finally ceased his worries, for the most part, he pressed his hands and leaned his forehead against the door to their bedroom, closing his eyes.
,I'm going to be a father.'
The thought repeated itself through his head over and over again, and he stayed where he was for a long time. It wasn't until he felt warmth on his hand and he opened his eyes that he realised he was crying again, but this time because he was happy. His chest hurt, and he didn't think it would do himself any good just to stand there doing nothing, so he wiped his eyes and bent to pick up his things. Before he left to shower and sleep, he looked towards the door of the bedroom once more and whispered, "I won't go up again."
